Some companies give you a script to read before you begin your Tarot work. Just so you know. Some readers are fine with that, some don't like the contrived nature of a script. Also - some companies really REALLY want you to "capture" the caller's name, address, and phone number. I found that difficult because most callers wanted to stay as anonymous as they could, and also I knew that my company wanted the information for - whatever, a mailing list perhaps? Tarot card reader My company, in addition to paying readers for how many minutes they were on the phone, paid bonuses for readers who were able to get this information from callers. So go with a company you feel good about in these areas. Anyway, I suffered financially because of that, although I still did okay because my callers stayed on the phone.

The Cafe Readers

If the big companies are not for you, you can still make good money if you live in an urban area. Here are some ideas:

1. Approach local bookstores, especially "new age" or independently owned book stores, and work out a deal with them. Some readers set up their tables in the lobby of the bookstore, some stores will have you set up near the metaphysical aisle. Depending on the deal you can work out, you may be able to charge clients a pre-set amount per reading (make sure you have a timer, so each client gets the same amount of time for the same amount of money). Or they may only let you put out a donation jar. If that's the case, try it anyway. Happy clients may donate more than you think!

2. Approach local cafes. In this case, since you'll be taking up a table that the cafe counts on for customer income, you'll probably be asked to pay a price to rent that table. That's fine and totally legitimate. You just have to make enough money to pay for your table and still take home a profit. If the cafe is located is a busy area, you'll do just fine.

3. Network yourself into the party circuit. Many cities and towns have dedicated party companies, who offer clients everything from pretend gambling to magicians, to music, to, yes, Tarot card readers. People love Tarot card readers at a party. And party clients are fun, because they don't take the process so seriously. You will be paid by the company, but (if the company allows it) you can certainly collect tips (which you must declare to the IRS).

The Local Heroes

If you choose to read Tarot cards in your home to private clients by appointment, you could do very well. I know of people who make very good Tarot Reader livings doing this. But it's not easy. You have to establish a reputation for yourself locally, and get the public talking about you. In this case, word of mouth is going to be your best advertising. I would suggest writing articles for local publications, getting on local television, doing a reading for a morning TV or radio host, or writing a column for a local periodical - even if you don't get paid for the writing. At the end of your column you give your contact information, and you will get people calling you.

The problem with reading in your home to private clients is that you must have a front area of your home in which the clients sit. And the rest of your home must be off limits. That's the only way you'll maintain your own privacy and safety. If a client has to walk through your living area into a den in the back of the house, you're putting yourself in harm's way, unless you only take clients you already know.

Stay Within the Law

If you work from home, make sure you check out your state and local laws regarding "fortune telling." Tarot card reading, if done in the way I suggest, is not fortune telling at all, but merely a "new age therapy" which is probably unregulated. But there's no harm in checking this out.

How Much to Charge

If you work for a big company, the money end of it is out of your hands. Just do the readings and cash the checks.

But if you work for yourself, the best way to decide on your price is to see what other readers are charging. Take the average, and charge that. You can always go up or down in price as economics demands. Keep good books. You may indeed get audited, and you are working in a cash business. With spotless record keeping, you'll be fine.

Overview

If you're compassionate, spiritual, and knowledgeable about your deck, you can do very well as a Tarot card reader. Always be kind to your clients and make sure they leave your readings feeling empowered.
