Personal Energy - What Can Xena Teach Us?

by Suzann Kale

The Xena-phile times in my life have been some of the most energetic and powerful times. Why? Because the more I copied Xena, the more productive and active my days became.

So how does a Warrior Princess re-stoke her furnace?

She fights for causes bigger than herself (Note to other Xena-philes: see When in Rome, Season 3; Daughter of Pomira, Season 4; or just about any episode you can think of!).

But she doesn't "just do it." Oh no, she's beyond that - she passionately fights for these causes (as she did in A Good Day, Season 4). Often she fights for someone else - either to protect them or to pay back a debt (Friend in Need, parts I and II, Season 6; Dreamworker, Season 1 - and, well, you name them, Xena's fighting for them! Not for herself.).

Study - and Learn From - the Energetic People Around You

Gabrielle, Xena's partner, is no tavern slouch, either. This girl has energy to match Xena's, and often she even walks while Xena rides her horse!

How does Gabby keep her fire burning? She loves her job. She adores her boss. And she has her own thing going on the side (her barding - she likes to journal). Her relationship with the famous and powerful Xena gives Gabby prestige, protection, and a mentor. One day Gabby will fill Xena's shoes. And like her warrior princess, Gabby has a passion for justice (Eternal Bonds, Season 5, being just one of many examples).

The prophet Edgar Cayce often told people that if they were exhausted or depressed, they needed to immediately go out into the world and help someone else. He guaranteed that their energy would pick right up.

Watching Xena and Gabrielle, I think their secret is living a life of passion. And they don't wait for something to excite them. They create their own passion. They cultivate a curiosity about the cultures and people around them. Even if Xena is "just" fishing, she's doing it with an unwavering focus and an unquenchable enthusiasm (Fins, Femmes and Gems, Season 3).

Passion Must Be Cultivated

Proactive action. Enthusiasm and passion as a conscious and practiced habit. It doesn't just happen. Xena trained her whole life to be a warrior.

Gabby worked at passion, too. She made a commitment when she chose to go off with Xena, that she would learn the life of the road, learn self-defense, learn about different cultures, help others, and document her adventures with quill and parchment. In Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards (Season 1), Gabby enrolls in school to hone her writing skills, and also helps a young writer (Homer!) build up his confidence.

Passion and Energy Develop from Daily Practice

Living a life of passion, keeping a broad vision of what's going on around them, channeling their energy into helping others: these are things Xena and Gabby practice daily. It doesn't just come to them in moments of epiphanies. It's there all the time, because they make the choice to keep it there.

Enthusiasm and focus = energy. But it takes work.
