Money Means Freedom

by Suzann Kale

Here's what keeps a woman liberated: her own assets. A bank account or house in HER name only.

Of course couples often use joint accounts. But a woman, married or single, needs to have her own accounts as well. As long as a woman is financially dependent on a man, she is at risk.

Money Is Not a Luxury

If she does not have her own finances going on, what is her risk? She risks losing the authority to make her own life decisions; to choose her own path. Huge life opportunities can pass her by if she can't leave an abusive man. If she has her own money, she can leave him and take the kids, no matter how he threatens, and she can get a good lawyer.

If she has her own money, a woman can go back to school and learn a trade. Even in the sweetest of marriages, a woman needs that economic freedom and power. She needs to know that although she is part of a team, she can still go off on her own when she chooses to, and no one can dictate otherwise.

Economic freedom for women is a giant plus when it comes to women's rights. That's why men, for so long, tried to keep women out of the job market. Then they tried to keep women out of management and the big bucks career tracks.

Each one of us who can, needs to be financially smart, independent, and responsible. That's how we'll change the economic status of women in countries where they are not protected by law or custom. We can build our wealth, and therefore our influence. We can network, we can legislate, we can travel, we can donate to powerful causes, we can be role models, we can mentor, we can lead.

But we must get our own financial house in order first. That's what this Money Management  section of Women-Lifestyles.com is all about.
