Flash Gordon was on our black and white TV when I was 7. Flash himself gave me nightmares, but there was a character named (I think) Melody. Or perhaps it was Melanie. I can't find her on Google, but
she's been a big part of my psycho-spiritual-cellular makeup since childhood. I wanted to be her so much that I'd often go through my days and nights, well, being her.
What was it about this fictional character that was strong enough to impact my entire life?
She was free. She was single and living her life the way she wanted. Even at that young an age, I understood that this character was ahead of her time. There was no way Melody was going to get married and sit around the house gawking at a new dishwasher, as women were supposed to do in the '50s. No, she was going to travel in a space ship, not get motion sickness, hang out with extra-terrestrials, be rescued by Flash, wear goddess gowns, lipstick, and perform some rescue operations of her own.
